The Netflix Late Reviewer: BBC’s TV series “Sherlock”

TV-screen-with-feetJanuary 24, 2015- By Steven E. Greer, MD

The BBC has been creating some hits over the last few years and TV viewers clamor to high-quality serial dramas, such as Downton Abbey. A lesser known good series is Sherlock, which is a modern day version of Sherlock Holmes.

Before you assume it is another cheesy remake of Sherlock Holmes, this one is quite good, starting with the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman work well together as Watson and Holmes.

The writing is smart. They do a good job tying in modern technology with the old fashioned observational and deductive skills of Sherlock Holmes.

The BBC strangely makes each season spaced years apart, which is one reason the show has been under the radar. The first “series” was only three shows aired in 2010. The next two came two years apart. A fourth season will be in 2016.

Trivia: Regarding the original books by A. Conan Doyle, the Sherlock Holmes character was based upon a legendary real-life Scottish surgeon named Joseph Bell from Edinburgh Medical School. Doyle was himself a doctor trained at Edinburgh.
